Certina Watches

While they may not be the oldest Swiss watchmakers operating today, Certina watches are unique in their history, design, and operations. Founded in 1888 by Adolf and Alfred Kurth, Certina began with just three employees and a home-based workshop. In the early days of the company, Certina merely produced watch parts for other companies in the region. It would take several years before the business transitioned into luxury watch production on its own.

As Certina established a vision for its brand, the Certina chronograph and Certina automatic watch came into being. Starting with Certina men’s watches, the company developed its GMT line, which was highlighted by classic circular faces, bold colors, and — of course — highly precise timekeeping. When demand for the luxury watch brand grew, Certina women’s watches were introduced, opening the brand to a whole new demographic.

More recently, Certina has made headlines for developing some of the most innovative watch designs in the world. In 1987, the company developed the world's thinnest self-winding chronograph, as well as the smallest minute-repeater movement (at the time). A year later, Certina created the thinnest split-second chronograph, though this achievement was later taken by another watchmaker. Nonetheless, Certina continues to find new ways to combine classic visuals with precise time-keeping mechanics.

Certina Watch Collections

One of the most notable qualities of the Certina brand is the sheer number of unique watch collections. The DS Action Diver combines antireflection treatment with high water-resistance, making it a great option for boat owners. The DS PH200M collection does not feature as much water resistance (these watches can only go as low as 30 meters underwater), but it does feature NEX scratchguard treatment for consumers who live a more active lifestyle.

The DS Podium collection includes watches that act as mobile calendars, providing you with precise times, dates, and even time zone adjustments. The DS-1 line of watches emphasizes classic fashion without a lot of extra bells and whistles. That said, the DS-1 collection includes the DS-1 Powermatic, which has a power reserve of up to 80 hours. Similarly, the DS-2 and DS-4 collections provide traditional designs, highlighted with bold colors and precise markers.

The DS First Lady and DS Eagle both make ample use of black and gold to add an extra touch of extravagance to your wrist. As the name implies, the DS Blue Ribbon line of watches combine the classic look of stainless steel with round, deep blue watchfaces. The DS Prime is one of the most unique collections in Certina’s lineup, as it includes both round and square-faced designs. Finally, the DS Royal collection utilizes symmetry and PVD bezel tachymeter markings to provide an easy-to-read, yet highly informational line of wristwatches.
